It Takes a Village: Building Your Community as a New Mom

Guest post by Christine Fradette, Atlanta City Lead, Mom League

There's a phrase you've probably heard countless times during pregnancy: "It takes a village."

It's often repeated with a smile, but it doesn't truly sink in until your baby arrives. All of a sudden, you're more in love than you've ever been, but you're also navigating sleepless nights, recovering from birth, learning how to feed a tiny human, managing a whirlwind of emotions, and wondering if you're doing any of it "right." You may have spent months preparing for labor and delivery, but nothing can fully prepare you for the emotional and physical transition into motherhood - or the endless questions that come with it. That's exactly why finding a community of moms walking through the same season of life is absolutely transformational.

At Mom League, we believe every mom deserves both expert guidance and genuine connection during the postpartum journey. Available in participating cities, our eight-week Newborn Series brings together small groups of moms and babies (0-12 weeks old) to learn from trusted local experts while building lasting friendships with women experiencing the same milestones, challenges, and joys. Led by a licensed therapist certified in Perinatal Mental Health (PMH-C), each session covers topics like feeding, postpartum recovery, infant sleep, developmental milestones, maternal mental health, relationship changes, and returning to work.

Because while every pregnancy, every baby, and every postpartum experience is unique, every mom deserves a squad. Whether you're a first-time mom or adding another little one to your family, having a strong support system isn't just helpful, it's essential. Research continues to show that social support plays a significant role in maternal mental health, confidence, and overall well-being during the postpartum period.

So what does building your village actually look like?

Ask for Help - and Accept It

Many new moms feel pressure to prove they can "do it all." But asking for help isn't a sign of weakness; it's one of the healthiest things you can do for both yourself and your baby.

When someone offers to bring dinner, say yes.

When a friend asks if they can hold the baby so you can shower, let them.

When your partner offers to take the next diaper change or soothe the baby after a feeding, let them take their turn.

People often want to help - they just don't always know how. Give them the opportunity, and don’t be afraid to ask for what you need.

Lean on Your Friends and Family

Your village doesn't have to look perfect. It might include grandparents, siblings, neighbors, coworkers, childcare providers, or the friend who always checks in with a simple text. Let people show up for you.

Invite a friend over for coffee while the babies nap. Ask your mom to fold laundry while you feed the baby. Schedule regular walks with another new parent. Sometimes the greatest gift isn't someone solving your problems - it's simply having someone sit beside you while you navigate them.

Motherhood can feel incredibly isolating. Connection reminds us we're not alone.

No Family Nearby? You Can Still Build a Village

Many families today are raising children far from grandparents and lifelong friends. While that can feel overwhelming, it doesn't mean you have to do motherhood alone.

Parenting communities and support groups, like Mom League's Newborn Series, are a great way to find connection during those early weeks with a newborn. If a local program isn't available near you, there are still many ways to begin building your village.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Attend baby story times at your library
  • Join neighborhood parent groups
  • Sign up for local baby classes such as music or yoga
  • Introduce yourself to another mom at the park
  • Connect with parents through your pediatrician or childcare provider

Most moms are craving the exact same thing you are: connection, understanding, and someone who gets it. Sometimes all it takes is one conversation to find your people.

Don't Forget to Take Care of Yourself

When you're caring for a newborn, your own needs often fall to the bottom of the list. But you can't pour from an empty cup.

Self-care during the newborn stage doesn't have to mean spa days or long afternoons away from home. Often, it's the smallest moments that make the biggest difference.

Maybe it's:

  • Taking a ten-minute shower without rushing
  • Drinking water before reheating your coffee for the third time
  • Walking outside with your baby
  • Reading a chapter of a book
  • Listening to your favorite podcast during a feeding

Giving yourself permission to care for yourself isn't selfish, it's necessary. Remember, a happier mom means a happier baby.

Your Village is Waiting

Building your village won't happen overnight, but every conversation, every coffee date, every support group, and every friendship is a step toward creating the community that will carry you through motherhood.

Whether your village is built through family, friends, trusted healthcare providers, or a community like Mom League, don't wait for it to find you. Reach out. Say yes to the invitation. Introduce yourself to the mom sitting next to you.

Because one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself - and your baby - is a village that reminds you that you were never meant to do motherhood alone.
