Why is World Down Syndrome Day Celebrated on March 21st?

At Dr. Noze Best, it’s so important to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st (and every single day all year long) because it gives us an extra opportunity to amplify the message of making a change in the Down Syndrome community.

Our hero product, the NozeBot, which was created by Dr. Steven Goudy, a pediatric ENT, came to life because of a patient with Down Syndrome. Children with Down syndrome are predisposed to chronic nasal congestion, nasal drainage, and more frequent sinus infections, partly due to a smaller nose and nasal sinuses. Dr. Goudy was inspired by the needs of this patient population when creating the NozeBot.

This year, March 21st, 2023  will mark the 18th anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day, and for the twelfth year in 2023, this day will be officially observed by the United Nations.

Why is World Down Syndrome Day Celebrated on March 21st?

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is an annual March 21 celebration and global awareness day officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. March 21 (3/21) was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

What is the theme for 2023 World Down Syndrome Day?

The 2023 theme for World Down Syndrome Day is: 'With Us Not For Us'

The theme is a human rights-based approach to disability, meaning that anyone who has a disability has the right to be treated fairly and have the same opportunities as everyone else, working WITH others to improve their lives.

The following video was created by Down syndrome International and was created to explain this year’s theme in more detail:
